Reluctant Apple laptop purchase a comin’
So my Titanium G4 Powerbook 550Mhz is finally going to be retired. The Airport has quit working for some reason and will not pick up a signal. I recently upgraded the HD and bought a $130 battery for it. It’s time for it to move on to Ebay.
Now I have to plan to buy another laptop during the absolute worst time ever for Apple laptops. So my plan is to get a iBook refurbished from Apple and weather the storm for now and not over spend on something that will be obsolete in 12 months. Dang. I even looked into getting a PC laptop from Dell, but I can get an iBook that will suit me for less than Dell wants for a similar configuration even with my discount from Dell. Strange that some Mac are now cheaper than PCs. Would love to have a Lifebook or a small Vaio, but they are too overpriced.
Any thoughts, suggestions or free laptops are appreciated.

12″ ibooks rock. i figure if you’re gonna get a laptop, you want something small, but fully functioning.

Yeah I feel good about the iBook over any other price point or option. A refurb for $750 or a new one for $900ish is ok. Especially when I can get $400-500 for my Powerbook.

Get the refurb. That is what I got Sara and it’s “rocks”. Might wnat to wait until Thursday though, you never know what they are going to release on Wednesday.
I’m going to sell our 14″ iBook too, to buy this.

I’ve heard speculation that the big announcement may be that the Intel Macs will be ready soon. Of course, that is pure speculation, but even I might consider buying a Pentium-M / Centrino based Apple laptop if something like that is coming.
In the off chance you do decide to go PC (or just for future reference), I highly recommend Dell, and strongly discourage Gateway.

I’d be into getting a 700M from Dell, but for $1055 + I just can’t justify it. http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_700m?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
I’d rather build a Myth TV box for way less. But I still think I need a laptop for some reason. The $750 iBook refurb sounds about right.

The intel machine will now come out until next year, most likely in the first roll out and not as late as Jobs said. The main reason we will not see any intel machines until 2nd quarter ‘06 is the OS isn’t finished, they just seeded a second release to devs of OSX86.
Del laptops aren’t very good either. Except the top of the line laptops and then your paying more then an iBook and almost as much as a powerbook.
Anyways, don’t get a “PC” and get an iBook they don’t degrade in value like a PC. So when you sell it on eBay when the PBs come out then you won’t loose much.
